MONARCA PARAGLIDING OPEN is organized by ALAS DEL HOMBRE with the authorization of Club de Vuelo el Peñón A.C. Alas del Hombre has paid the Club the rent of the flying site only during competition days. Pilots registered in Monarca Open Paragliding will not pay the fees established by the Club de Vuelo el Peñón A.C. during competition days. Pilots registered in Monarch Paragliding, must pay the rates established by the local club clubpenon.org when flying outside of competition days
The 2025 MONARCA PARAGLIDING OPEN will be held from January 12-18 2025
COMPETITION RULES AND INFORMATION
VENUE
The competition will be based at El Peñon, Take Off in Temascaltepec.
Organization
The event will be organized by Alas del Hombre. Learn more about the organizers.
Cancellations
a) Accepted entries are non transferable.
Refund policy:
b) Entry fee will be refunded minus 50 U.S. (Admin fee) for cancellations before October 1st 2024, zero thereafter or:
c) Entree fee can be credited for Monarca 2026 for cancellations before October 1st 2024, zero thereafter.
Events Prizes
a) Prizes awarded for first, second and third in class subject to numbers of participants.
b) Prizes for teams on the basis of accumulated points of the top 3 per task in each team.
FORMAT
* The event will be run in general according to FAI Sporting code rules for paragliding Cross country competitions.
* The event is restricted to certified gliders.
* There will be trophy winners based on each glider class.
* There will be a separate class for those who have minimal experience (Rookie's) and one for the Girls.
* We will set the task and explain why we set it and how to do it.
* We show pilots the best way to go, where the thermals are, and where the difficult sections are.
* All pilots are welcome to join briefings and ask questions and contribute to the experts de-brief.
* It is all about inclusion and instruction, we have a few top guns but they must be helpful to others and there is no elitism or room for ego’s.
* We want to create a fun, challenging, and inclusive flying environment.

Classes will be based on EN certification.
Open Class, Serial Class, Sport Class, Club Class, Women, Teams, Mexican, Rookie.

The organization retains the right to make a final decision on glider class.
Selection
1) Maximum 130 pilots
2) Monarca Paragliding Open Pilotos must hold equivalent F.A.I. IPPI 4 or who present a valid license and comply with the Organization criteria.
3) Competing pilots must have full medical insurance. In case of accident make sure which level of Hospital you or your insurance can cover:

4) Competing Pilots must satisfy themselves and the organisers that they are adequately experienced to compete and fly in the prevailing (thermic) conditions at El Peñón in January
5)The organisation reserves the right to refuse admission.
6) In the case of the event being over subscribed a priority selection criteria for pilots may be introduced.
A number of places will be reserved by the organisation.
Eligibility - Gliders
1) Paragliders must be Certified - this is a class competition and no open class gliders will be accepted. Gliders should have appropriate EN stickers, gliders not bearing stickers will be scrutinised as will all prize winning gliders.
2) Only paragliders Certified on EN/B, EN/C, EN/D, to EN/CCC standards
3) EN/A paragliders are not allowed
Eligibility - Teams
1) Teams comprise 4 pilots, scores for best 3 in each task to count
2) Teams must have at least one Club pilot (EN/B) if available and a maximum of 1 CCC Class.
Equipment: Safety & Scoring
1) Pilots must carry 2m radio utilisable in the bands between 145 MHz which will be kept on the competition channel at all times when flying.
2) Pilots must carry a recently repacked reserve parachute
3) Pilots will be supplied with a Live Tracking device each flying day
4) Tracks for scoring will be taken from the tracker whenever possible. Pilots should also use an approved GPS for back up: see check list on GPSdump website for details of approved type.
5) GPS must be capable of recording altitude in the track log

Scoring will be using FS.Check out the GPSdump website for details of supported GPS'. We have cables for the common models but bring your own cable if you've got one and label it as yours. Pilots are responsible for ensuring they have a cable available to download their GPS.
Format - Competition
1) The competition is proposed as a fun paragliding XC event.
Format - Tasks
1) Tasks will only be set in appropriate conditions
2) Tasks will be preceded by a weather and site briefing and information from meet director and where possible top pilots on their planned route for the task
3) Tasks will, where possible, be set to maximise pilots in goal - (>50%)
4) A digital turnpoint map of the flying area will be provided.
Retrieves
There will be a full retrieve service along the roads of the course of the task, no small offroad will be taken by organization retrive, you must walk to main roads. Transport to take off each day from the HQ.
Mobile Phone Note
It's strongly suggested to acquire a Mexican SIM card from Mexican mobile telephone to use during the competition for coverage and dialing feasibility. Usually pre-paid system SIM cards cost no more than $5 US Dlls. and a pre-paid system cheap mobile unit with SIM card included around $30 US Dlls.
